From Surgery to Smiles: Students Explore Dentistry and Facial Restoration with Dr. Richards
Last Thursday, the Health Care Career Club hosted an exceptional guest speaker: Dr. Samuel I. Richards, D—Staff Prosthodontist, whose visit left students energized, informed, and more curious than ever about the world of dentistry and oral/maxillofacial surgery.
Dr. Richards shared his unique career journey as both a dentist and maxillofacial surgeon, highlighting the depth and diversity of the work he does restoring the head, neck, and oral structures. As a prosthodontist, he specializes in designing and placing dental prostheses—crowns, implants, dentures, and highly complex oral and facial restorations. He explained how the profession blends medicine, engineering, art, and problem‑solving, making it one of the most interdisciplinary and hands‑on specialties in healthcare.
Students were captivated not only by the advanced medical techniques he described but also by his candid discussion of work–life balance, the realities of being a specialist, and how he stays grounded while working in such a demanding field. The Q&A session was lively, with students eager to learn more about surgeries, training pathways, and the technology behind modern dental reconstruction.
One of the highlights of the visit was the hands‑on demonstration. Students had the rare opportunity to examine and practice with facial and dental molds, allowing them to see firsthand the precision and creativity involved in restorative work. For many, this was a defining moment that brought classroom learning to life.

Dr. Hollins specializes in restoring movement, function, and quality of life for patients recovering from orthopedic injuries, surgeries, and chronic musculoskeletal conditions. His leadership and expertise in military physical therapy promise another engaging and inspiring session.
